A Fuerteventura refuge giving abandoned and mistreated farm animals safety, healing and a second chance.
About Animal Academy
The Animal Academy is a nonprofit sanctuary on Fuerteventura that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes farm animals who have suffered mistreatment and neglect.
Farm animals are too often treated as commodities, left to endure abandonment, injury and abuse. The animals who reach The Animal Academy frequently arrive with untreated illness, physical damage and deep psychological scars from their time in human hands. They need patient, expert care before they can begin to trust again.
Founded by veterinary and animal rescue specialists Julio Cruz and Belen Roca, the sanctuary provides medical treatment, preventive care and the behavioural rehabilitation that traumatised animals need to recover. The team also designs and builds proper enclosures and coordinates rotating volunteers who help with daily care, upkeep and fundraising.
The sanctuary is home to a wide family of rescued animals, among them donkeys, horses, goats, pigs, sheep, cattle, camels, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks, geese and peacocks. Alongside hands-on care, it runs education and community events to share its work and shift how people see these animals.
The Academy believes every life counts, and that animals who have suffered can go on to thrive and stand for others like them. Its work depends on donations, sponsorships and volunteers. That support makes recovery possible, giving rescued animals a genuine second chance to live without fear.
