Britain's dedicated vulture charity, breeding threatened species for release back into the wild.
About Horstmann Vulture Conservation Trust
The Horstmann Vulture Conservation Trust is the UK's dedicated vulture breeding and release charity, working to reverse the dramatic collapse of vulture populations worldwide.
Vultures are among the most threatened birds on the planet. Populations have fallen by as much as 99.9 per cent in parts of Asia and around 90 per cent across Africa in recent decades, with the majority of the world's vulture species now at risk of extinction, largely because of poisoning and habitat loss. Their decline is not only a wildlife tragedy but a threat to human health.
Based in Carmarthenshire in South Wales, the Trust has pioneered captive vulture breeding for more than 40 years. Its work pairs hands-on breeding for both population resilience and reintroduction with scientific research into genetics and the birds' microbiome, helping make conservation efforts more effective.
Its focus species include bearded, hooded and Egyptian vultures alongside Andean condors, and it partners with international programmes to return captive-bred birds to the wild, including Egyptian vultures sent from the UK to support recovery in Europe. The Trust also offers consultancy and training to strengthen vulture conservation more widely.
Vultures are nature's clean-up crew, removing carcasses, limiting the spread of disease and holding deep cultural meaning across continents. Lose them and ecosystems suffer. Support sustains the breeding, research and partnerships that give these remarkable birds a future.
