Grandma Lily retires to sanctuary after a lifetime of work

An elderly elephant of around 65, retired to sanctuary after a lifetime of work.

Grandma Lily — known by her Thai name DaoReung — has arrived at sanctuary after more than six decades of working life. Estimated to be over 65 years old, she is now in the care of the Save Elephant Foundation, an Ecoflix partner, at its home for rescued elephants in northern Thailand.

For an elephant of her age, the journey to sanctuary marks a profound turning point. Elephants who spend decades in working roles often arrive carrying the physical and emotional toll of those years, and DaoReung is no exception to that reality.

At the foundation's sanctuary in northern Thailand, she can now rest, roam at her own pace, and exist without the demands of labour. It is the kind of life she was always meant to have.

DaoReung's story is far from unique. Across Asia, countless elephants have given decades of service to human endeavour, often with little in return. Their needs — physical, emotional, and social — can go unmet for much of their lives.

What the sanctuary offers is something straightforward but significant: space, quiet, and the company of others. For an elderly elephant who has carried the weight of a lifetime, those things matter enormously.

Her arrival marks the beginning of a different chapter. It will not undo the years that came before, but it offers something real — the chance to simply be, cared for and unhurried, for whatever time remains.

For Grandma Lily, that is no small thing.
