Rescuing and rehabilitating Asian elephants in Thailand while caring for countless other animals in need.
About Save Elephant Foundation
Save Elephant Foundation is a Thai non-profit, founded by conservationist Saengduean "Lek" Chailert, dedicated to protecting Asian elephants and other animals in need across South East Asia.
The story of the Asian elephant is one of survival against the odds. Many live in captivity, worn down by the tourism and logging industries, and crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic left countless animals facing neglect and hunger when income suddenly vanished. Save Elephant Foundation exists to come to the aid of these elephants and offer them a different future.
The charity's work rests on four pillars: rescue, rehabilitation, recovery and education. It steps in to help elephants in distress, gives them the care they need to heal from physical and psychological injury, and provides sanctuary where they can recover their natural behaviour and join a herd. At its sanctuaries elephants live without chains, without riding and without performing tricks.
Founded by Lek Chailert and now active across Thailand, Cambodia and Laos through a network of partner sanctuaries, the foundation also offers a home to hundreds of other rescued animals, from dogs and cats to buffalo, horses and more. Alongside rescue, it champions ethical, sanctuary-based tourism, supports mahouts and local communities, and works to shift how elephants are seen.
Supporting this work helps rescue and rehabilitate elephants in need, sustain the sanctuaries that give them dignity and freedom, and spread a model of compassion and respect for animals across the region.
