SYNOPSIS

“Tales of the Páramo” tells the story of Aika, a magical creature born in the heart of the páramo, a mysterious ecosystem in the Colombian Andes. Gifted with the unique ability to communicate with plants, Aika embarks on an exciting adventure to find the Macarenia clavigera, a legendary plant with changing colors that holds ancient secrets. Throughout her journey, she faces unexpected challenges that push her to the limits of her abilities.

Her journey not only unveils the hidden wonders of this unique ecosystem but also highlights the profound connection between nature and humans, inviting reflection on biodiversity, environmental conservation, and the need to live in harmony with our surroundings.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

Juan Pablo Mesa is 26 year-old Colombian biologist and filmmaker with a master’s degree in Wildlife Filmmaking from UWE University, in collaboration with the BBC Natural History Unit. His passion for ecology and scientific communication has driven him to combine his expertise in research, visual storytelling, and audiovisual production to create projects that inspire environmental awareness and promote the conservation of unique ecosystems. Throughout his career, Juan Pablo has directed, produced, and researched various audiovisual projects, including: – ‘Cuentos del Páramo’ (2024): A short film blending fantasy and natural history to highlight the importance of Colombia’s páramos. – ‘Silver Rush’ (2024): A conservation-focused project about salmon in Alaska, where he contributed to underwater photography and sound recording. – ‘Gypaetus: The Last Bone Breaker’ (2021): A bluechip documentary following the life of the stunning bearded vulture in Spain.
