International Primate Protection League

About our NGO partner

At our South Carolina sanctuary, we provide lifelong care and refuge for rescued gibbons and otters. These small apes and playful aquatic mammals find compassionate care and enriching environments after enduring hardship as laboratory subjects, discarded pets, or zoo exhibits. Beyond our sanctuary gates, we work globally to protect primates through rescue efforts, advocacy, and investigations, envisioning a world where all primates thrive in their natural habitats.

IPPL is a grassroots organization dedicated to protecting the world’s primates, great and small. Since 1973, we have fought against wildlife trafficking, worked for habitat conservation, and improved the welfare of primates in captivity and the wild. IPPL operates a sanctuary in Summerville, SC, offering a permanent home for gibbons and short-clawed Asian otters in captivity. IPPL’s arching goal is to help those groups working in the field to create a sustainable environment for primates to flourish. We offer networking opportunities and small grants.
